What is it? Hypnotherapy is the process of using hypnosis to help you to reach a deeper trance state to accomplish what you would like to do in your life.
Anyone with intelligence and a small amount of concentration can be hypnotized if they want to be hypnotized. In fact, everyone enters a trance state several times a day. Yes, everyone from the janitor, the Pope, the bus boy and the CEO, to the Dalai Lama and all people in between.
Have you ever watched TV and were surprised to find that someone had entered the room without your knowledge? Have you attended a movie in a theater and laughed or cried while watching the show? Those weren't real people you were looking at. You were merely observing lights flickering on a screen, but your imagination thought it was real, real enough to make you laugh or cry. Have you ever driven or ridden in a car and not known where you were because you were thinking of something else?

All of those examples are different levels of trance states. All hypnosis is self hypnosis. Let me repeat that. All hypnosis is self hypnosis. A hypnotist is just the facilitator who guides you to a deeper level providing that you want to go there. Hypnosis can not ever be done against your will. Ever. And there has never been a terminal state of hypnosis.
To get out of any trance state, you only have to open your eyes and decide that you don't want to be in a trance state. That's it! You get to decide if you're in a trance or not. You decide if you are hypnotized or not.
Why be hypnotized? Say you have a habit that you just can't seem to break no matter how hard you try. You know you need to live differently but somehow will power isn't enough. That's because will power has to do with your conscious mind. Your routines and habits are run by your subconscious mind. Your subconscious takes over so you don't have to waste your energy thinking about what you're doing.
I'll give you an example. Brushing your teeth. You grab the toothbrush, put toothpaste on it and brush. Do you start on the right or the left, on the top or the bottom? Are your teeth together or is your mouth open? Do you start in the back, the front, the inside or the outside? (Try brushing your teeth with your other hand for a change.) Brushing your teeth is an automatic routine run by your subconscious.
One of the jobs of your subconscious mind is to run habitual routines so you don't have to consciously think about them. The easiest way to change a habit is to reprogram your subconscious mind. Reprogramming can be done quickly and easily through hypnosis.
Your brain is like a high speed computer. To get the right results from a computer you need to have the right software installed. Hypnosis allows you to download a new program and delete the old habit for which you no longer have use. No, it doesn't hurt. In fact, you'll feel relaxed and refreshed after a hypnosis session.

What is hypnosis like? The best definition I have is that hypnosis occurs when your body is totally relaxed and your mind is totally focused like a laser beam. Nothing else seems to matter except the focused, or trance, state that your mind is in. This may be why people pop into trance states so often.
